SUMMER 2013 ROCK AND JAZZ CAMPS
Rock Camp, July 8-12:
- This high-energy day-camp for teenagers is all about how to Rock! Campers form Rock bands, learn their favorite tunes, write their own songs, and even learn about the history of Rock & Roll and how to promote themselves in the music industry. At the end of the week there's a Rock Show where all the bands have their turn to take center stage!
Jazz Camp, July 29-August 2:
- Led by a passionate group of instructors, this intensive day-camp will inspire young Jazz musicians and first-time Jazz students to explore ideas, sounds, and feelings in Jazz music. Students will perform in combos, study Jazz-related music theory and also learn about the history of Jazz and some essential knowledge about classic Jazz compositions. This camp culminates in a public Jazz Gig where participants can share what they've learned and gain confidence as live performers and improvisers.

Early Childhood Division
Focused on inspiring and nurturing musical awareness and thought from infancy through Age 7, the Early Childhood Division features several approaches to childhood music education. Creative, fun classes are offered for infants and toddlers using MusikGarten© and other approaches, while the Suzuki Method is employed for students ages 4-up for the following instruments: Piano, Violin, Cello, and Guitar, with an emphasis on developing ear training skills, solid technique, and excellent tone production.
Community Division
PCM's largest division is devoted to providing top quality Music Instruction for All Ages and Ability Levels for the greater Southern Maine region. Students range in ages from Age 8 through Senior Citizens, and no prior musical training or experience is necessary for students to enroll. The heart of our musical instruction is Private Lessons, which include unlimited access to courses in Music Fundamentals (Theory) and Music History (All Levels), along with overview courses such as our Great Composers Series, (recently focussing on the music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel). Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to perform in Chamber Ensembles, Rock/Blues/Jazz Ensembles, and as soloists in our Community Division Showcase Concert Series. All Orchestral Instruments are offered, as well as Lute, Baroque Guitar, Recorder, Organ, Electric Guitar, Electric Bass, and African Drums. Our goal is to afford students a tremendous opportunity to hone their skills as performers, composers, and music scholars in a vibrant social environment friendly to all ages.
Professional Division
The only PCM division that requires an audition for admittance, the unique Karger Professional Division is a pre-college program designed to prepare the most promising music students in the region for a career in music. Faculty in this program are all graduates of Music Colleges and Conservatories, and offer the highest level of expertise and training for all students who participate. Through a blend of Private Lessons, Chamber Ensembles, Music Theory & Ear Training, Master Classes, and Exclusive Performances, the Karger Professional Division at PCM is the most well-rounded and demanding forum through which Maine's most talented young musicians can prepare themselves for the collegiate music environment. Programs in the Karger Professional Division are heavily subsidized by the generous support of the Karger Endowment Fund.
Any education at PCM provides individualized instruction with an outstanding faculty, an understanding of music, performances and other social experience to share the love of music. Registration is ongoing. Join the Portland Conservatory of Music today.
